About ISPPD

The International Society of Pneumonia and Pneumococcal Diseases (ISPPD) is a non-profit, non-governmental association and has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The ISPPD was officially launched on 11 March 2012 during the ISPPD-8 Symposium in Foz de Iguaçu, Brazil. Currently the main activity of the ISPPD is the biennial ISPPD international symposium, which is the leading event for those interested in pneumococci and pneumococcal diseases, bringing together professionals in the field to raise global awareness and improve standards of diagnosis, prevention and treatment.

The rationale for creating ISPPD originated with the need for a legal framework for the ISPPD Symposium. Initiated in 1998 at the 1st meeting in Denmark, ISPPD symposia have been organised every two years in different countries with local sponsors. The number of delegates has grown significantly over the years and each of the past few meetings have welcomed over 1000 delegates.

Mission and Objectives

The ISPPD mission is to improve the knowledge and understanding of pneumococcal biology, pathogenesis and epidemiology; the host response to pneumococcal carriage and infection; and the prevention and treatment of pneumococcal disease.

ISPPD pursues the following objectives:

  • to facilitate scientific exchange through a biennial international ISPPD symposium
  • to enable other symposia, educational activities, and/or publications as appropriate to the ISPPD mission
  • to promote scientific collaboration and research
  • to promote public awareness of pneumococcal disease, treatment and prevention
